Some vets reveal euthanising pets can be one of the most emotionally draining aspects of the job, it takes a mental toll on everyone involved. It lots of situations for vets it causes a grief process to trigger and feels very isolating without communication and support from those around them. Programs were developed to identify staff with mental health issues in the vet community - there is now a 24-hour counselling service in Australia as well as workshops on how to handle the mental toll that comes with being a vet. Establishing self-care practices that allow vets to slow down helps them to gain clarity, says Karen Gately. It’s always important to educate people that having feelings are okay and they have a safe space to talk about it.
